Bowie Hosts Babysitter Safety ClassOn Saturday, May 30, the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department proudly hosted its first Babysitter Safety Program. Sixteen young people from our community participated in the 5 hour course, which was taught by Barry Contee of the Silver Spring Volunteer Fire Department. The course covered basic home safety, first aid, child care and other topics. We hope that this free class will help to prevent injuries in the future, and we look forward to hosting this class again.
Bowie Units Run Working House Fire in Company 39's AreaAt 7:56 PM on May 26 a house fire was reported in the 2600 block of Kresson Place in Company 39's area. The first arriving unit reported light smoke showing from a two-story single family home and asked for the working fire dispatch, bringing Engines 839 (Bowie-Belair), 839B, 819 (Bowie-Huntington), and AA7 (Arundel); Tower 843 (Bowie-Mitchellville); Truck 820 (Marlboro) and Truck 828 (West Lanham Hills) to the scene. Chief 19 (Havens) was in command of the fireground, and Chiefs 39A (Turner) and 43B (Howard) commanded crews working in the house. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and Engines 819, 839, and 839B and Tower 843 were held in service for overhaul and clean-up. Canteen 839 (Locker and Cole) also responded to the call. An engine company from West Lanham Hills (Company 28) and a tower crew from Kentland (Company 33) were sent to Station 39 on a transfer.
Bowie VFD participates in the City of Bowie's Memorial Day ParadeOn Saturday, May 23, the Bowie VFD participated in the City of Bowie's Memorial Day Parade. It was a beautiful day for a parade, and units from all three stations were on hand, including Chief 19A's buggy, Canteen 19, Engines 191 and 192 (Huntington/Old Bowie); Brush 39, Canteen 39, Engine 392, Tanker 39, and the Special Events Ambulance (Belair); and Engine 432 and Tower 43 (Mitchellville). Also participating were the career crews staffing Ambulances 199 and 439. Everyone had a great time, and we look forward to next year's parade.
Auxiliary Runs House Fire on Alderwood Lane in Company 43's AreaAt about 5:23 PM on May 23 units were alerted to respond to a house fire in the 16300 block of Alderwood Lane in Company 43's area. Engine 431 was the first arriving unit and reported a working fire on the second story of a single-family home. Engines 843 (Bowie-Mitchellville), 846 (Kentland), 818 (Glenn Dale), 839 (Bowie-Belair); Trucks 820 (Marlboro) and 805 (Capitol Heights); and Rescue Squad 833 (Kentland) responded. After the working fire dispatch was issued Auxiliary members proceeded with Canteens 19 (Amyx) and 39 (Locker and Cole), arriving on the scene at about 5:55 PM. It was a hot afternoon, and about two cases of water were distributed to crews operating on Alderwood Lane. Both units returned to quarters at about 6:45 PM.
Bowie VFD is Hosting a Free Babysitter Safety ProgramAs a part of our ongoing community safety outreach mission, the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a Babysitter Safety Program on Saturday, May 30th, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The class will be held in the Department's training hall at Company 43 which is located at 16408 Pointer Ridge Drive in Bowie. The program is free and includes lunch for all who attend. It is designed to give prospective babysitters aged 12 and older an understanding of basic child care and home safety. Preregistration is required! To register, please call 301-390-8255 by 12 noon on Wednesday, May 27th.
SafeKids Program Provides Information on Car Seat InstallationIf you need help properly installing your child's car safety seat please make an appointment at one of the sites listed in this Prince George's County SafeKids document (Microsoft Word version | Adobe PDF version). Please note that you must make an appointment to get your seat(s) installed! The Safe Kids Coalition offers car and booster seats to low income families through a loaner program costing $10.00. The program is run out of the Judy Hoyer Center (8908 Riggs Rd., Adelphi, MD 20783), and may be contacted at 301-408-6860.
Company 39 Participates in Open House at Kenilworth ElementaryOn Saturday, May 16, members Ray Wingo and Travis Murdoch took an engine to the open house at Kenilworth elementary for show-and-tell from 1000 to 1500. Lots of children had the chance to scramble all over the engine and use tons of imagination driving and fighting fires. FF Wingo also spent some time explaining engine company operations to a couple of interested citizens. The career crew from Station 39 (Belair) were also in attendance, staffing the in-service engine and the ambulance until 1330, and enjoyed playing with the children and talking with their families. Lots of fun was had by all.
Bowie VFD Members Participate in Career Day at Local SchoolsMembers of the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department took part in the career day events at Northview Elementary and Kingsford Elementary Schools this week. Tower 43 was displayed at each school, and the students were given hats, pencils and fire-safety related reading and coloring material. We'd like to thank the coordinators at each school for allowing us to participate. Special thanks go to Assistant Secretary Michelle Goodier of Company 43 for organizing these events.
Bowie VFD Participates in Baskin-Robbins 31 Cent Scoop NightOn Wednesday April 29, Members of the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department and Auxiliary participated in Baskin-Robbins 31 cent scoop night to support the National Volunteer Fire Council. It gave us another great chance to engage the citizens of Bowie and distribute fire safety information. A couple of our members even helped dip ice cream cones due to the line stretching out the door.
