About Us

The Bowie Auxiliary was formed in October 2002 with four members, and currently has more than a dozen members. Auxiliary members have provided operational support on calls including house fires, building collapses and hazardous materials incidents. Other functions include "Lunch with Santa", Risk Watch programs in local elementary schools, and public relations work. The Auxiliary has a van for small responses and a new canteen unit for large incidents. While a small group, the Auxiliary is very dedicated.

Auxiliary members are responsible for providing on-scene support to the department's operational personnel when required. This includes providing beverages, food and other support as needed. The Auxiliary also provides all three Bowie VFD stations with fundraising, public relations and public education support.

The Auxiliary has been involved with a project known as "Risk Watch" since October 2003. Risk Watch is geared towards preventing childhood injuries. The program is a part of the State of Maryland's effort, along with the National Fire Protection Association, to help reduce injury to children.

Men and women ages 16 and older can join the Auxiliary Support Team. Ages 16 to 18 can assist with in-house activities that the Auxiliary is involved in. Members 18 and older can be of administrative and operational support at any of the three Bowie Volunteer Fire Department stations. More information on becoming a member is available on the Bowie VFD's Recruitment Information page.
